Of all the officers within a lodge, the Master or 'Worshipful Master' is the most senior.

He presides in 'the chair' for a year and is elected by the other members of the lodge via a ballot. The role carries an increased number of responsibilities and the Worshipful Master for that year can make exclusive decisions for the benefit of the lodge, he also oversees all lodge business throughout the year and officiate over lodge ritual and any ceremonies undertaken.

The term of office is for one year and then the current Worshipful Master can be elected for another term (certain restrictions apply) however once that former term is complete then the Worshipful Brother is then referred to as a Past Master.
